The ASC’s 100th Anniversary
The American Society of Cinematographers was officially chartered in 1919. In honor of the Society’s 100th anniversary, the August issue of AC is dedicated to the ASC’s first century of loyalty, progress and artistry. This issue presents profiles of the Society’s 15 founding members, offers a detailed history of the ASC, spotlights the Society’s recently released list of 100 milestone films in the art and craft of cinematography of the 20th century, shares members’ insights as they imagine what’s to come in the next century, and much more.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Robert Richardson, ASC — recipient of this year’s ASC Lifetime Achievement Award — reteamed with writer-director Quentin Tarantino for their sixth feature collaboration. Set in 1969 Los Angeles, the project stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt as actor Rick Dalton and stunt double Cliff Booth, who strive to stay relevant in the mercurial motion-picture business. Richardson welcomed AC to the set and details his work on the period production.
The Lion King
Caleb Deschanel, ASC partnered with director Jon Favreau and visual-effects supervisor Robert Legato, ASC for this retelling of Disney’s animated classic. Employing cutting-edge advancements in virtual-production methodologies, the filmmakers present the story of the lion Simba (voiced by Donald Glover) and his animal compatriots in a “live action” style that was brought to bear in the digital realm. Deschanel and Legato sat down with AC to discuss the evolution of the craft.
