Checco Varese, ASC teamed with It director Andy Muschietti for this eagerly anticipated sequel, which picks up 27 years after the events of 2017’s It. Following their first encounter with the evil Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard), the now grown-up members of the Losers Club reunite to once again face their greatest fears. Varese welcomed AC to the set in Toronto.

Snowfall Season 3

Eliot Rockett and Tommy Maddox shared cinematography duties on the third season of this series, which chronicles the crack-cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles in the early ’80s. AC spent a day on location with each cinematographer during the production of Season 3; the directors of photography and their crew share their perspectives on re-creating period South Central.

Nicole Hirsch Whitaker was behind the camera for episodes 3 through 10 of this series, after her husband, James Whitaker, shot the first two episodes; James went on to direct episodes 3, 4, 7 and 8, with showrunner Steven Conrad directing the remainder. The cinematographers offer their insights into the stylish and darkly comic modern noir.


Karl-Walter Lindenlaub, ASC joined director Nick Hamm for this comedic crime thriller inspired by real events. Set in the early 1980s, the story follows the rise of John DeLorean (Lee Pace) and his DeLorean Motor Co. through the eyes of ex-con pilot turned FBI informant Jim Hoffman (Jason Sudeikis). Lindenlaub details his work on the feature, which was shot in Puerto Rico.

Classic Lighting

The magazine’s yearlong celebration of the ASC’s 100th anniversary continues with this overview of classic lighting techniques.
