Game of Thrones
(HBO)
Jonathan Freeman, ASC; Fabian Wagner, ASC, BSC; and David Franco divvied cinematography duties for the eighth and final season of HBO’s sweeping fantasy series. AC visited the production on location in Ireland during principal photography of the final six episodes. Our coverage offers an in-depth look at the making of Season 8 while also offering a detailed look back at the cinematography of the preceding seven seasons, which were photographed by some 12 additional directors of photography.
Abby’s
(NBC)
Gregg Heschong, ASC and his crew welcomed AC to the set of this multicamera sitcom shot outdoors in front of a live audience. The series’ title refers to the unlicensed, makeshift bar that Abby (Natalie Morales) has set up in her backyard — an establishment that attracts a diverse and tight-knit cohort from around her San Diego neighborhood. Heschong speaks to the production’s unique shooting situation.
What We Do in the Shadows
(FX)
Following the work of pilot cinematographer Christian Sprenger, director of photography DJ Stipsen took the reins for this comedy series based on the feature of the same name. The series offers a documentary-style look at the undead lives of a group of vampires who have been together for hundreds of years and now reside in Staten Island. Stipsen details the dark arts that he and his collaborators have brought to bear for the show.
ASC 100: A Century of Education and Outreach
As part of the magazine’s yearlong celebration of the ASC’s 100th anniversary, AC opens the books on the Society’s wide-ranging educational initiatives at home and abroad, ranging from regular gatherings of cinematography students at the Clubhouse to the ongoing International Master Class series that’s touched down in countries around the globe.
The July issue’s departments also offers illuminating insights:
Shot Craft offers tips and tricks of the trade for cinematographers both established and on the rise.
ASC Close-Up profiles Society member Stijn Van der Veken, whose credits include episodes of the series Our Girl, Silent Witness, Shetland and Outlander, as well as the features Sum of Histories and Many Heavens.
