The May 2013 issue of American Cinematographer magazine, which has a special focus on digital cameras. The issue also offers a recap of this year's ASC- and Academy Award-nominated cinematographers.

Oblivion (Universal)
Claudio Miranda, ASC shot this futuristic drama, which follows a veteran soldier (Tom Cruise) as he travels to a distant planet to destroy the remains of an alien race. What the soldier discovers once he gets there, though, changes everything he's understood to be true. Joseph Kosinski co-wrote and directed.

42 (Warner Brothers)
Don Burgess, ASC worked with director Brian Hegeland to tell the story of Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) as he crosses the Major League Baseball color line and makes history with the guidance of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford).

Midnight's Children (Paladin Films)
In this drama shot by Giles Nuttgens, BSC and directed by Deepa Mehta, two Indian children are switched at birth in a Bombay hospital within moments of India's declared independence from Great Britain in 1947. Though they spend their lives on opposite sides of the conflict, the two remain cosmically connected.

DMX Lighting
European correspondent Benjamin B offers an introduction to the theatrical digital multiplexing technology DMX, which is being used with increasing frequency on film sets. The article features basic examples of DMX applications, techniques and tools.

Academy Scientific and Technical Awards
We offer a complete review of this year's ingenious honorees, whose technical contributions to filmmaking were feted on February 9 during a prestigious dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Included in our coverage are nods to visionary filmmaker Bill Taylor, ASC, who received the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation, and Cooke Optics, which earned an Academy Award of Merit (in the form of an Oscar statuette) for their continuing innovation in the design, development and manufacture of advanced camera lenses that have helped define the look of motion pictures over the past century.

The May issue's departments also offer interesting features:

  • Short Takes analyzes the Justin Timberlake video "Suit & Tie," shot by Matthew Libatique, ASC.

  • Production Slate features an interview with Anthony Dod Mantle, ASC, BSC, DFF about shooting Danny Boyle's crime drama Trance, and a piece about Declan Quinn, ASC and his work on the thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
