The April 2019 issue of American Cinematographer magazine, which features a special focus on optics.

Mapplethorpe
(Samuel Goldwyn Films)

Nancy Schreiber, ASC was behind the camera for director Ondi Timoner’s intimate portrait of the celebrated and controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (portrayed by Matt Smith). Schreiber discusses her work on the period production, which traces Mapplethorpe’s rise to fame in the 1970s and ’80s.

Captain Marvel and Dumbo
(Disney)

Ben Davis, BSC offers his insights into his work on each of these productions. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel limns the origin of the eponymous superhero (played by Brie Larson). Tim Burton was in the director’s chair for Dumbo, which retells the classic animated tale in live action.

The Dirt
(Netflix)

Toby Oliver, ACS joined director Jeff Tremaine for this feature based on the bestselling autobiography from Mötley Crüe. The unflinching tale of success and excess tracks the band’s four misfit members as they rise from the streets of Hollywood to the heights of international fame.

The ASC’s Motion Imaging Technology Council

As part of the magazine’s yearlong celebration of the ASC’s 100th anniversary, AC spotlights the Society’s influence on motion-picture technology, highlighting the achievements of the Motion Imaging Technology Council (MITC) and its forerunner, the ASC Technology Committee.

The April issue’s departments also offer illuminating insights:

Shot Craft focuses on specular highlights, offers a primer on macro lenses, and answers the question, “What is a polarizer?”

ASC Close-Up spotlights Society member David Stockton, whose extensive television credits include episodes of the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Eleventh Hour, The Forgotten, Revolution, Supergirl, Runaways and Gotham.
