Star Wars: The Last Jedi
(Disney – Lucasfilm)
Steve Yedlin, ASC reteamed with his longtime collaborator, writer-director Rian Johnson, for this eighth episode in the Skywalker saga. Picking up right where the previous chapter, The Force Awakens, left off, the movie finds Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) drawn out of seclusion by Rey (Daisy Ridley) while, across the galaxy, General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) leads the Resistance in its ongoing war against the tyrannical First Order. Yedlin and his collaborators welcomed AC to the set at Pinewood Studios in England, offering a firsthand view of the eagerly anticipated production.
Rising Stars of Cinematography
Following the introduction of this spotlight section in 2017, AC’s editors surveyed a record-setting field of worthy candidates to compile 2018’s list of 12 directors of photography whose impressive work to date promises stellar achievements in the years to come. This section presents profiles of each of these “rising stars,” whose credits span commercials, music videos, shorts, series and features.
ASC Lifetime Achievement Award
Russell Carpenter, ASC began his career shooting documentaries and educational films. Following his breakthrough feature, The Lawnmower Man, he went on to photograph a range of genre films, including Hard Target, True Lies, The Indian in the Cupboard, The Negotiator, Charlie’s Angels, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Parched, Awake and 21. He received an Oscar for his work on director James Cameron’s Titanic, and he’s currently reteaming with Cameron for the director’s upcoming Avatar sequel. His recent credits also include Ant-Man and xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
ASC International Award
Russell Boyd, ASC, ACS hails from Victoria, Australia. After shooting numerous commercials, he transitioned into narrative filmmaking. He’s worked frequently with director Peter Weir, on features including Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Last Wave, Gallipoli, The Year of Living Dangerously, The Way Back and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World; Boyd received an Oscar for his work on the latter. Boyd’s credits also include Tender Mercies, Crocodile Dundee, Cobb, Tin Cup, Doctor Doolittle, and Ghost Rider.
ASC Career Achievement in Television Award
Alan Caso, ASC has compiled credits on more than 50 television titles. He’s earned two Emmy nominations for his work on Six Feet Under, as well as nods for Into the West and George Wallace, the latter of which also earned Caso an ASC Award. He is currently shooting the series For the People, and he recently shot the upcoming pilot for Reverie. Caso’s credits also include the television projects Tour of Duty, Blackout Effect, Running Mates, Blackbeard, Big Love, Dexter and Hawaii Five-O.
ASC Presidents Award
Stephen Lighthill, ASC began his career shooting network news and documentaries, then transitioned into independent features and television. A past president of the ASC, he’s served a number of years on the Society’s Board of Governors as well as the National Executive Board of the International Cinematographers Guild. He’s been saluted with the Deluxe Bud Stone Award for Outstanding Educational Contributions to the Art and Craft of Cinematography from the ICG, and the SMPTE Kodak Educational Award. Lighthill is currently the Senior Filmmaker in Residence for the cinematography program at the American Film Institute Conservatory.
ASC Close-Up spotlights Society member Neil Krepela, whose visual-effects credits include Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Ghostbusters (1984), Big Trouble in Little China, Batman Returns, True Lies and Heat.
