I Am the Night
(TNT)

Trevor Forrest; Matthew Jensen, ASC; and Michael McDonough, ASC, BSC each tackled two episodes of this six-part miniseries, which tells the tale of the mysterious teenager Fauna Hodel (India Eisley) and the reporter (Chris Pine) who tries to help her unlock the secrets of her past. The cinematographers offer their insights into their collaborations with one another and with director Patty Jenkins for the period production.

The ASC Clubhouse

In 1936, after occupying offices at two different locations on Hollywood Boulevard, the American Society of Cinematographers moved to 1782 North Orange Drive, which is still its home today. As part of the magazine’s yearlong celebration of the ASC’s 100th anniversary, AC takes readers on a tour of the iconic building — and offers a look back at how it and its neighborhood have changed over the decades.

Working on Location

Buckle up and enjoy the ride as cinematographers and their collaborators across departments discuss the practicalities of shooting in settings far and wide. How do they go about finding local equipment and crew? Which locales have provided particularly positive experiences? What horrors have they endured? This and more are explored.

The March issue’s departments also offer illuminating insights:

Shot Craft examines the work of 2nd-unit directors of photography in addition to offering tips and tricks for aspiring and veteran cinematographers alike.

Short Takes follows Christopher Wohlers and Ryan Todd as they shoot the documentary web-series Black & White, which takes viewers onto the ice with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.

ASC Close-Up spotlights Society member Sean MacLeod Phillips, whose work as a cinematographer and visual-effects supervisor spans a wide array of large-format 3D productions. His credits include Texas: The Big Picture, Wild Safari 3D, Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D, Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure, Mysteries of the Unseen World and Journey to Space.
