Rachel Morrison, ASC reteamed with Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler for this latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the death of his father, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns to his homeland — the isolated, mysterious and technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda — to claim the throne and continue his fight for justice as the masked hero Black Panther. Morrison and her collaborators detail the techniques and philosophies they brought to bear for the comic-book-inspired action.

Annihilation

Rob Hardy, BSC and writer-director Alex Garland follow their collaboration on the 2014 sci-fi-thriller Ex Machina with this big-screen adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel. The story follows a small team — including a biologist (Natalie Portman), a psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and a surveyor (Tessa Thompson) — who embark on a secret expedition into a strange and dangerous land known as Area X. Hardy discusses his approach to the project and his ongoing collaboration with Garland.

Film Independent Spirit Awards Cinematography Nominees

The 2018 Film Independent Spirit Award nominees have been announced, with five features singled out in the Best Cinematography category: The Killing of a Sacred Deer, shot by Thimios Bakatakis; Columbus, shot by Elisha Christian;Beach Rats, shot by Hélène Louvart; Call Me by Your Name, shot by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom; and The Rider, shot by Joshua James Richards.
