The Captain

Florian Ballhaus, ASC reteamed with a longtime collaborator, director Robert Schwentke, for this black-and-white feature set during the last days of World War II. The cinematographer and director each share their experiences making the movie, which shot entirely in Germany and was a passion project of Schwentke’s.

How It Ends
(Netflix)

Peter Flinckenberg, FSC and director David M. Rosenthal invited AC to jump into the passenger seat during the making of this Netflix feature. When a mysterious apocalyptic event begins to wipe out entire cities, Will (Theo James) loses contact with his wife, Samantha (Kat Graham), and must team up with his ever-disapproving father-in-law, Tom (Forest Whitaker), on a perilous cross-country road trip to find her. The crew details their work on the Winnipeg, Canada-based production.

Juliet, Naked
(Lionsgate)

Remi Adefarasin, BSC was behind the camera for director Jesse Peretz’s comedy about the awkward and unlikely triangle that forms between Annie (Rose Byrne), her boyfriend Duncan (Chris O’Dowd), and singer-songwriter Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke). Adefarasin and his crew welcomed AC to the set of the U.K.-based production for a firsthand look behind the scenes.

ASC International Cinematography Summit

AC offers a recap of this unique four-day event, which was presented by the American Society of Cinematographers and attended by representatives of cinematography organizations from all around the world. Meeting at the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood — with daily trips to other venues throughout Los Angeles — the participants discussed professional and technological issues and worked to define how cinematographers can best maintain the quality and artistic integrity of the images they create.
